What is augmented reality?

Augmented reality is a term increasingly used when discussing social media, particularly mobile social media, but what is it? 

The term is easily explained with a photo but somewhat more challenging without. Wikipedia describes it as “a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are merged with (or augmented by) virtual computer-generated imagery - creating a mixed reality.”

Time For Business To Engage As Social Media Overtakes Search Engines In Australia

Those who think social networking, and Twitter in particular, are just trends take note of new figures from Hitwise who last week reported that more Australians used social networking than search engines during the Christmas 2009. 

During the week of Christmas (week ending 26 December 2009) the Social Networking and Forum industry category overtook Search Engines share of visits for the very first time. While this looked like a short term lead, we are now seeing continued growth of Social Networking and Forums to now sit just 0.4% share behind Search Engines in week ending 16 January 2010.

PayPal Goes Mobile; Square Shows Future For Mobile Payments

PayPal goes with eBay like bacon goes with eggs (or ice cream goes with bread in Thailand), but now the company that brought confidence to internet payments has turned its attention to mobile users in Asia-Pacific. 

Yesterday PayPal announced that its “new mobile application is now available to iPhone, BlackBerry and Android phone users in APAC”, with Thailand included. The app is downloadable from respective app stores while the company has also announced WAP support for other mobile devices.

Social Media Trends Head East

Social media services are the same across the world but individual cultures and technology in each country mean that services often have very different meanings, popularity and usage.

That said, the west has a habit of innovating and implementing technology and web trends first. This gives an advantage for other markets, like Thailand, as high profile social media commentator Drew Benvie told Director last year.

“The advantage for Southeast Asia is that the region can observe the US and Europe experiment in areas of online marketing. When the time is right businesses can then roll out initiatives learning from others’ successes and failures.”

Google Indexes Twitter: Why We Should Be Cautious

Google has revolutionised how the internet is organised to the extent that Google search is practically an index of the web. 

Nielsen’s recently announced search engine traffic rankings for December 2009 emphasise Google’s dominance, albeit that they account for web traffic in the US only. 

According to the statistics Google ranked first with second placed Yahoo receiving more than 30% less traffic and Microsoft in third with just 9.9% of Google’s traffic.
