Songkran 2010 has already taken on the feel of the festival last year in 2009 as once again Bangkok is home to a sizeable number (definitely less than one million) of temporary-residential red-shirted political protesters.

The international media spotlight has been on Bangkok since the protests began last month, but for Thailand itself the question is, as it was at Songkran 2009 and the airport seizure in 2008, what is the cost of the latest protest?

Measurement and social media marketing

Social media has seen a rapid uptake in Thailand over the last twelve months, as is best show by the growth of Facebook users in the country from around 200,000 in January 2009 to more than 2 million today. 

Social networking has much potential for business but only now, with an estimated 8 million people using various social of social networks in Thailand, are examples and business cases beginning to emerge in Thailand.

Location based services begin to mature with potential for business

Location-based social network FourSquare has just celebrate its first birthday (although it didn’t arrive in Bangkok until December, as we announced). Data fro, Four Square usage in the US, from Experien Hitwise, shows a steady grown in usage over the last months. 

A year on and location-based service are no longer a future trend as many are here already or tipped to arrive soon.

He is never far from the news in Thailand but social media is one of former Thai Prime Minsiter Thaksin Shinawatra's key communications mediums as he seeks to maintain a presence in Thailand despite being in exile.

Social media is an established form of mainstream communications for politicians in the West. Obama ground-breaking 2008 presidential campaign, in particularly, demonstrated just how effective new media communications could be when combined with more traditional methods. 

Politicians use social media in exactly the same way a company does, to promote messages to specific audiences.
