Social Media Trends Head East

Social media services are the same across the world but individual cultures and technology in each country mean that services often have very different meanings, popularity and usage.

That said, the west has a habit of innovating and implementing technology and web trends first. This gives an advantage for other markets, like Thailand, as high profile social media commentator Drew Benvie told Director last year.

“The advantage for Southeast Asia is that the region can observe the US and Europe experiment in areas of online marketing. When the time is right businesses can then roll out initiatives learning from others’ successes and failures.”

So here is a look at some social media trends in the UK which may be coming to Thailand in the near future.

Google Indexes Twitter: Why We Should Be Cautious

Google has revolutionised how the internet is organised to the extent that Google search is practically an index of the web. 

Nielsen’s recently announced search engine traffic rankings for December 2009 emphasise Google’s dominance, albeit that they account for web traffic in the US only. 

According to the statistics Google ranked first with second placed Yahoo receiving more than 30% less traffic and Microsoft in third with just 9.9% of Google’s traffic.

PM Abhisit's Speech to FCCT

It is without doubt that PM Abhisit is an accomplished speaker, and Thursday evening's address to FCCT members and guests was the perfect setting for him to show his skills.

In a (too) smooth presentation the PM gave his government a pat on the back for their performance through 2009 as well as having more than a few digs at his political rivals.

He claimed to have the situation at Map Tha Put under control, although we are likely to see new investment asked to meet higher standards, and insisted the first stimulus package was effective while conceding that "managing the economy last year was not easy" - perhaps the understatement of the year.

Networking and PM Abhisit Talk

After a week of letting people settle back into work, events are back with a bang this week with foreign chambers holding networking evenings giving business leaders an opportunity to catch up after the seasonal festivities.

Director attended Amcham's event on Wednesday evening at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, which saw a reasonable turn-out, but more importantly, a significant change in attitude from attendees. Gone are the long faces lamenting the ills of the business world, replaced by enthusiastic predictions for the coming year. It seems a psychological barrier has been passed - we are no longer in 2009 and can breathe easier. While challenges still remain, no more so than on the political front, it was good to hear positive views being expressed.
